Hot issues for vending – April 2022

  • A quick look at some topics relevant for the vending industry.

    Sustainable Products initiative presented.

    At the end of March, the EU Commission presented its proposal for a Regulation on Ecodesign requirements for sustainable products (up till now known as the ‘Sustainable Products Initiative’).

    The proposal aims at addressing the design of every product placed on the EU market in order to make such products more durable, reliable, reusable, upgradable, repairable, easier to maintain, refurbish and recycle, and energy and resource-efficient.

    Introducing requirements not only for energy efficiency but also for circularity and reduction of the environmental footprint of products is planned, and would go much further than what is currently seen in the Ecodesign Regulations.

    The new policy framework will undoubtedly bring an impact in the coming years for the vending industry, particularly as the Commission has now stated that the policy is designed to be introduced for almost all physical products placed on the EU market.

    Ecodesign Working Plan 2022-24 published.

    The EU Commission has published its Ecodesign Working Plan for 2022-24, which outlines the product groups it plans to regulate in the coming years.

    After strong EVA arguments made last year, hot drinks vending machines are not included in the final plan, and as such will not have an imminent Ecodesign Regulation introduced for them.

    EVA participates in study reviewing PSD2.

    The EVA has responded to a stakeholder survey as well as a follow-up interview as the EU Commission reviews the Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2). This is an important first step to ensuring the needs of vending are heard before a new version of the legislation is proposed.

    EVA publishes report on the use of bottled water in vending.

    The EVA recently contacted vending machine operators and bottlers as part of a survey to help analyse the current trends of bottled water in our industry.

    The objective of the study was to understand how bottled water is currently provided in the vending industry, to understand if new formats for bottled water are being used and to what extent, and to see if European and national policies focused on sustainability are impacting the demand for water in vending machines. The survey asked European bottlers and vending machine operators a series of targeted questions.

    The new report based on the more than 130 responses to this survey outlines a number of interesting findings, including:

    • Over half of operators say sales of bottled water has increased in the last 5 years;
    • 42% of operators say PET bottles are the only format for bottled water in their machines, but this varies in different markets;
    • Almost half of operators say that there has been an increased demand from clients for water dispensers.

    The report is free for members and can be purchased if not yet an EVA member.

    EVA Members can consult the latest versions of the EU Newsletter for full details on these and other topics.
